We are based within a Trust that houses its own dedicated obstetric unit, and that means our patients benefit from very clear and smooth pathways both into HIV services and back out again to antenatal and other relevant staff and facilities.

Ninety-five per cent of pregnant women now undergo an HIV test. HIV serology results must be handled appropriately, of course – and positive results need a rapid response in order to maximise the chances of preventing mother-to-child transmission.

More About Pregnancy and HIV

We therefore offer very quick consultation with a multidisciplinary team for pregnant women found to be HIV-positive. If the mother-to-be has no symptoms, is in her first trimester, and is newly diagnosed, we see her within ten days; that time halves to five days if the woman is past her first trimester, or requires any radiology procedures; but for pregnant women with symptoms, or one who is close to or already in labour, we will be consulting with her within hours.

We follow all relevant national guidelines for the management of pregnancy, childbirth and the immediate postnatal period for women with HIV. Our specialist multidisciplinary team includes an obstetrician, an HIV specialist physician, a specialist midwife, a specialist HIV pharmacist and a paediatrician. Specific individuals will be designated to your care.

Our outpatient HIV unit is able to prescribe and provide antiretroviral drugs during pregnancy where necessary. However, we liaise directly and intensely with our colleagues in obstetrics and paediatrics in order fully to understand birth plans and paediatric care plans.

We are committed to the care of both HIV-positive mothers and their children, concentrating on limiting mother-to-child transmission – and improving the HIV-related outcomes of the entire family.
